About Hali
At Literacy Lighthouse Northwest, Hali Tuomi provides expert reading tutoring, specializing in helping children with dyslexia through the Orton-Gillingham approach.
My passion is helping to develop young lives so that they have the skills and abilities that allow them to be independent and confident in who they are, no matter what challenges they face.
I am an experienced classroom teacher and dyslexia reading specialist with summer experience as an assistant camp director. I am recognized for my behavioral and classroom management skills, dependability, and leadership qualities. I hold a Professional Teacher Certificate with the State of Alaska and an Orton-Gillingham Certificate at the Associate Level.
In my nine years as a classroom educator, I taught grades five and six with the Anchorage School District. I then spent four years in grade one at an independent school in Anchorage. These differing environments allowed me to explore various curricula, behavioral management programs, and teaching philosophies.
Along my professional journey, I sought education in dyslexia and pursued Orton-Gillingham training. After two years of courses and practicums, I became certified in the Orton-Gillingham Approach and a member of the Orton-Gillingham Academy at the Associate Level. I have knowledge of the observable traits of dyslexia and experience in developing and teaching literacy in a diagnostic, sequential, explicit, and multi-sensory way. I strive to advocate for students with learning challenges, such as dyslexia, by helping educators and parents understand their child’s learning style and how they can better support them.
The Orton-Gillingham Approach
A teaching approach for literacy (spelling & reading) that is:
Diagnostic: Students are assessed to determine what skills and concepts they need to learn. They review and master a skill before moving on to another.
Structured: Lessons follow a routine and are research-based, meaning they follow the "science of reading."
Sequential: Concepts/skills build upon one another.
Multisensory: Lessons use multiple senses (visual, auditory, and kinesthetic) to connect the three parts of the brain.
Explicit: Students are taught the rules and patterns of decoding.
Lessons Include:
Phonological Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension
